Silence

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Over the years I have found that in virtually every yoga class there is someone who is distracted by noise.  One of my students mentioned this to me one day.

I told her that there is no such thing as silence.  Even in the farthest reaches of the universe there is sound.  Sound is a result of vibration and vibration is energy; therefore, sound is actually life in a very pure and raw form.

So perhaps, rather than being distracted and getting annoyed at the clangs, bangs, honks, sirens, phones, kids and babies, you can rejoice in the life that inevitably surrounds you and embrace it.

To put it generally, to be happy, if you can’t change what’s around you, then you must change your mind.

Until next time,
Tiger

Welcome!

Welcome to the new Sleeping Tiger blog!

I’m very excited to have this, and I hope it makes it easy for you to read past stories about the tigers, see great pictures of them and keep up with the fun and antics. I will be gradually updating this blog to include all the past newsletters and this is where all the news will happen, so come back and check in often.

I also hope it spurs you to comment, ask and post! You will be able to read stories about the tigers that won’t be up on the website, so sign up, sign in and enjoy!

Here is a little information about the tigers that’s not up on the website.

I have two tigers. Izzy is a three year old female Bengal who went into her first real heat in October 2006. And there’s Max, my 5 year old, fully grown and mature Siberian.

To give you an idea of Max’s approximate size, his paws are as big as dessert plates and his shoulders are about 40 inches high. If you take a carpenter’s tape measure and put the metal tab on the floor, pull the metal tape out to 40 inches you will get a very good idea of just how big he is.

They eat different amounts of food during different seasons. In the fall when it’s getting colder, they naturally want to gain some fat, so they eat larger meals. In the summer they eat a little less. Averaging it out, Max is currently eating about 12.5 pounds of meat a day and Izzy eats about 7.5 – 10 pounds.

They enjoy Natural Balance Carnivore 15, which has a 15% fat content. Highly respected zoos, such as the San Diego Zoo and the Audobon Society feed their felids this food. And the tigers absolutely love it. However, I will sneak them chicken and pork ribs every now and then. Well, more like several times a week…it’s a real treat for them.

Before I feed them, I clean their pens and play games such as stalk and chase, peek-a-boo and sometimes I rub small areas their pens with deer or horse musk. This gets them playing and curious about their environment. I will also spray their Boomer Ball Toys with the water jet to get the balls rolling inside their pens. This gets them riled up too, and one doesn’t feel like playing the other will watch, kind of like we watch TV.

This is how the blog works: Click on the category below to read the latest entry, and you should also be able to read the archives. If you have any questions or problems, please email me LTD@sleepingtiger.org and I will do what I can to help.

Thank you and welcome to the Oklahoma Tiger family!

Until next time,

Relieving Stress

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

There are lots of ways to ease stress:  Breathing, walking, hot baths, meditation, worry beads, prayer, tossing Zen Sticks…I don’t think that is the problem that prevents so many people from being rid of their stress and able to have a continual sense of well being.

While these things can be effective, doing them is like shutting the barn doors after the horses are out. And when you are stressed, meditation is the last thing you’re able to do, it’s like trying to meditate after drinking a pot of coffee. Your adrenaline is going, your heart rate is up, blood pressure up…your body is ready to act and you tell your mind that everything needs to calm down. Is it any wonder we have such a hard time being calm and relaxed?

Meditation and tossing a Zen Stick to achieve meditation help give you a grounded sense of well being. That’s why it’s important to be dedicated to meditation every day. Not only are there physical benefits, there are many emotional ones as well.

1. You carry a basic sense of well being that is not easily removed during stressful moments.

2. After meditation your mind is quiet and alert, so you handle new stress much more effectively.

3. Once you’ve established a pattern of meditation and stress management, your self confidence grows, as does your patience, tolerance and compassion.

But what do you do when those moments of high anxiety roost in the back of your mind?

Let’s begin with a definition of stress you probably haven’t heard of yet. “Stress is when your mind is not where your body is.

Think about that for a moment.

When you are waiting for a job interview, you feel stress, because your mind is thinking about the interview, what will happen if you get the job, and what will happen if you don’t. All this is going on in your mind while your body sits and waits. Stress.

Another example is when you have a high pressure job and the senior partner just added to your caseload, or even worse, reprimanded you for a mistake. Now the pressure is really on. What happens is your mind analyzes what just happened and how it needs to respond, while your body is on the phone talking with a client. Stress.

When you are completely focused on what you are doing, not only do you not feel stress, but your creativity is proportionately enhanced, so you think more clearly, more confidently, more efficiently…the proverbial goldmine of attitudes.

So, the problem isn’t so much how to deal with stress, but how to avoid it in the first place.

1. Meditate every day, preferably in the morning. The Zen Stick is perfectly balanced and weighted to help you get into a meditative state very quickly. (Go to www.sleepingtiger.org mexitil niacin works like viagra for more information on Zen Sticks and how they work.)

2. Focus on what you’re doing, and only on what you’re doing.

3. Approach your whole life with the understanding that disappointments and frustrations can help you grow and become stronger, rather than seeing them as problems.

4. Approach your relationships with the understanding that people are not perfect, and that the tolerance you show them will help them tolerate others.

5. Learn from your mistakes so you don’t repeat them. This will allow you to begin a new path toward wisdom.

6. Be kind to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up every time you think you’ve made a mistake, just learn from the experience.

7. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, people love giving it, it makes them feel worthwhile. It also makes you a member of the human race.

8. Dare to dream and be willing to do what it takes to make them come true…hope does wonders, but by acting on your dreams you empower yourself. This sense of empowerment, in turn, makes you much more effective in dealing with stress and preventing it.

9. When seeking courage to make your dreams come true, really believe what you’re doing is good for everyone…wholly believe in your self!

10. Stop worrying and begin doing, that way your mind can rest.

11. When all is said and done, deeply congratulate yourself. Think about what you’ve accomplished in the day and be proud. If there are things you’re not proud of, then you’ve always got tomorrow to do it better!

I hope these few words have given you avenues and some answers. And remember, the object is not just to live, but to live well. And by taking a few simple steps you can do just that, I believe in you!

Hot Summer Days

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

It’s been very hot and humid the last few days.  Without cooling off, the tigers would be interested in very little.  Food, play, affection…nothing would appeal to them.

So on days that it’s very hot (90 degrees +) I head out in the afternoon and cool off the cement, give them cool water to drink and put cool water into their pools.  They really appreciate it and they get very silly.

Today they were a little tired, last night we had belated 4th of July fireworks, so they were pretty nervous through the night and didn’t get much rest.

Yesterday when I rolled Max’s food in, it rolled under his Poingy Ball.  While I was cleaning up the food shed I heard the unmistakable sounds of his attacking the ball.  After he realized the ball was indeed dead he began to eat, licking at his dinner.  But after he’d lick his food, he’d roar at the ball for good measure.

Izzy has taken up a new hobby, sitting on her ball in the pool.  This tiger never ceases to surprise me with the games she comes up with.

Cocoa is doing great, I’ll post pictures of her in the next few days.  For such a helpless, tiny and injured kitten, she sure has come a long way.  My three big dogs had her surrounded, and she backed them all off!  What a little tiger she is!

Below are pictures of Max and Izzy, Max waking up as I put cool water into his pool in Kenny’s old pen, his drowning the ball in his pen and lastly, Izzy trying to sit on the ball.

Until next time,

Tiger

As Night Falls…

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

I love when night falls.  The air itself seems to get grayer.  Standing outside next to the tigers, their black stripes fade into the background, then the orange blends into the air and all you can see is the white on their faces; on their jowls and above their eyes.  It’s really strikingly beautiful and a nice way to end the day.

I tried to take pictures of it tonight, but what appeared on the LCD screen on the digital camera, isn’t what came out when I transferred the pictures onto the computer.  They were just too dark and when I tried to lighten them, all the color, including the white would wash out.

One of these days I’ll figure out how to get great shots at dusk for ya so you can see it for yourselves.  If any of you have any tricks for me to try using with the camera to get this shot, please let me know!

We’ve only got another week to go before the newsletter we have all come to know and love ends and becomes a blog that thousands can read anytime on the website.

Cocoa has turned into quite the little terror around here.  She’s amazing.  She’s so stoic and calm in the car and at the vet, she stays where I put her until I come back, but she just came racing into the office here and is now stalking my shoelace.

Until next time,
